Barebone Computer Systems Using the AMD Socket A

What is a Socket A?

Socket A refers to the type and specifications for a socket which will accept and correctly connect certain CPUs (Central Processing Unit) to a motherboard. The Socket A uses a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) connection method. The CPU drops into the socket (only one way of course) and then a lever on the side of the socket locks it into place. You can see this in the picture below. The lever is on the right hand side of the socket.

What processors will the Socket A accept?

The socket A generally accepts only AMD processors. These processors have 462 pins which must fit into the socket so they can connect to the motherboard. Here are the basic specifications for the Socket A.

     1.1 to 2.05 operational voltages
     Bus speeds of
100MHz (x2) and 133MHz (x2)
