Computer Networking

A computer network in the most basic terms is just a group of computers tied together by wires or wireless to share information. The Internet is just a giant network in simple terms. Computer networks can also be classified according to the hardware and software technology that is used to connect the individual computers in the network. Types of networks include Optical fiber, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, HomePNA, Power line communication or G.hn. Ethernet uses physical wiring to connect devices. Frequently deployed devices include hubs, switches, bridges and/or routers.

Network Software

Network software is the information, data and programming used to make it possible for computers to communicate with each another. Network software is used to share information among computers. It encloses the information to be sent in a “package” that contains a “header” and a “trailer”.

The header and trailer contain information for the receiving computer, such as the address of that computer and how the information package is coded. Information is transferred between computers as either electrical signals in electric wires, as light signals in fiber-optic cables, or as electromagnetic waves through space (wireless).Information is transferred between computers as either electrical signals in electric wires, as light signals in fiber-optic cables, or as electromagnetic waves through space (wireless).

Network Adapters

A network adapter is a piece of computer hardware that interfaces a computer to a network. The term "adapter" was popularized originally by Ethernet add-in cards for PCs. These adapters plug into a slot on the motherboard and used to be in numerous types and configurations. Modern network adapter hardware is available in several form factors. Besides traditional AT and PCI Ethernet cards, some network adapters are PCMCIA devices (also know as "credit card" or "PC Card" adapters) that plug into slots usually on a laptop. USB devices are also available. Some wireless network adapter gear for laptop computers are integrated circuit chips pre-installed inside the computer.

Wireless Network

A wireless network is any type of computer network that is wireless which means that no wires connect the computers together to share information. Wireless networks have become very popular in private homes using a wireless router and some simple network software. Wireless networks are great as long as the users configure it to be a protected and secure network. The software that comes with the wireless router allows for this, but the user must configure it themselves. It is dangerous to have a non-protected network because someone can park across the street and login to your network if you do not protect it. Please read your manual completely if you have never set up a wireless network.
