Power Protection

Have you ever had the power go out when have been working hard on a project and lose it? Of course, you supposed to Save your work every few minutes but if you forget and the power dies so does your project. Power protection is needed in a lot of circumstances. There are many products available to help with this possible catastrophe.

UPS Battery Backup

UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. An uninterruptible power supply is a battery back up device that lets your computer keep running for at least a short time when the primary power is lost. It also provides protection from power surges.

A UPS contains a battery that starts to provide power when the device senses a loss of power from the wall outlet. When the UPS notifies you of the power loss, it gives you time to time to save any data you are working on without losing everything you have been working on.  When you lose power, any data in your computer's random access memory (RAM) is erased. When power surges occur, a UPS intercepts the surge so that it doesn't damage your computer.

Surge Suppressor

A surge suppressor protects a computer from a power "surge". Drrrr. What is a power surge? A power surge, or transient voltage, is a significant increase in voltage above the normal a flow of electricity. In normal household and office wiring in the United States, the standard voltage is 120 volts. If the voltage rises above 120 volts, there is a problem, and a surge protector helps to prevent that problem from destroying your computer. Some power strips claim they provide surge suppression or protection. Beware, some of they may do a fine job, but if you want a real surge suppressor, get a real one.
